What Makes Hypnobabies Different?

One question I get all the time is, "What is the difference between Hypnobabies and this other program?"

Every childbirth education course out there has its own unique set of benefits it offers to students. As a doula and childbirth educator, I've been able to serve clients who have used many of the more common classes. I even took some of them for my first two pregnancies! It might come as a surprise to many of you that I actually decided to certify and become a Hypnobabies instructor before I had even used Hypnobabies for a birth of my own.

So why did I have so much confidence that I should teach Hypnobabies? I did a lot of research, and the things that were important to me were student satisfaction rates, partner participation and involvement, usable tools for the birth, and the thoroughness of the program. After comparing many of the methods available, it was clear to me that Hypnobabies stood out in every category:

Student Satisfaction

An overwhelming majority of people I have personally talked to who have used Hypnobabies were very satisfied with how Hypnobabies helped them during their pregnancies and births. Even if things didn't go exactly as planned, Hypnobabies prepared them with the tools they needed to feel confident and peaceful about their births. I didn't see this level of satisfaction with other methods.

Partner Involvement

Hypnobabies includes specific training for the birth partners. Many birth partners might be skeptical about whether it will really work, or if they can actually be of help. Thankfully, Hypnobabies gives very specific, concrete, and easy-to-remember skills so that birth partners can feel confident, competent, and helpful during the birth. Birth partners even get their own hypnosis track to listen to!

Tools

When a student signs up for Hypnobabies class, they immediately get to start listening to relaxing audio tracks that pave the way for a peaceful birth experience. There are 16 hypnosis tracks they listen to during pregnancy and birth, 5 written hypnosis scripts, and a quick reference guide so you can have the most commonly used information easily handy, and so, so much more!

More comprehensive

Our class is over 21 hours of instruction and includes basic information about nutrition and exercise, risks and benefits of commonly used medical procedures, the anatomy of what actually happens during the birth and immediately postpartum, breastfeeding, etc. etc. etc. You won't need another childbirth class, comfort measures class, Lamaze class, etc.

Most other childbirth preparation classes come from the perspective similar to: "Labor is going to be terrible, and everyone knows it, but here are some tips that might help you to tough it out. Maybe." They use tricks like the ice cube test, where students hold an ice cube in their hands for a specific time, and use breathing or distraction techniques to try to take their mind off of the pain.

Hypnobabies comes from a completely different perspective! Hypnobabies teaches that childbirth can be easier and more comfortable than our culture traditionally expects it to be, and gives you well-studied and successful tools for making your birth easier and more comfortable. We don't use distraction techniques; instead, we tune into the way the body and mind naturally work together and give you relaxing tools to practice that will make your birth so peaceful and relaxing!

Many Hypnobabies students are so relaxed during pressure waves (contractions) that they look like they are taking a restful nap. Care providers are often blown away at how calm Hypnobabies students are, even during the more intense parts of birthing.

FAQ Series Part 3: Is Hypnosis Compatible with my Faith?

FAQ Series Part 3: Is Hypnosis Compatible with my Faith?

One of the main issues I had to work through when I began my journey to becoming a Hypnobabies instructor was whether or not my faith allowed for the use of hypnosis. I had been told all my life that hypnosis was an invitation for evil spirits to take over one's mind.

However, once I began to understand what hypnosis really is - and isn't - and I studied what the scriptures actually say about it, it became clear to me that hypnosis is a wonderful tool that works beautifully with my faith.

My personal faith encourages me to constantly purify my thoughts. Hypnosis is one way to do this intentionally. My faith also urges me to "fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." (source). Again, I can do all of these intently and resolutely through self-hypnosis.

I find that most of the resistance to hypnosis stems from a misunderstanding of what hypnosis actually is. Hypnosis is NOT handing over control of one's mind to someone else. Hypnosis IS using a relaxed state of mind and body (such as what one experiences daily through activities like falling asleep, driving a car, praying, and watching television) to affect positive and purposeful change in one's belief system, leading to positive outcomes.

Hypnosis is very similar to meditation, and most religions recognize and promote the practice of meditation - without reservation. If someone feels that their faith prohibits hypnosis, he or she should never watch tv, listen to the radio, read books, pray, daydream, or meditate, because these activities all induce an "altered" state of mind, which is actually measurable through EEG machines.

In Hypnobabies, we learn to recognize and release the negative beliefs we have about childbirth, then replace those beliefs with more positive ones. This leads to a more enjoyable pregnancy and birth, and has even been life-changing for some students!
