What Makes Hypnobabies Different?

What Makes Hypnobabies Different?

One question I get all the time is, "What is the difference between Hypnobabies and this other program?"

Every childbirth education course out there has its own unique set of benefits it offers to students. As a doula and childbirth educator, I've been able to serve clients who have used many of the more common classes. I even took some of them for my first two pregnancies! It might come as a surprise to many of you that I actually decided to certify and become a Hypnobabies instructor before I had even used Hypnobabies for a birth of my own.

So why did I have so much confidence that I should teach Hypnobabies? I did a lot of research, and the things that were important to me were student satisfaction rates, partner participation and involvement, usable tools for the birth, and the thoroughness of the program. After comparing many of the methods available, it was clear to me that Hypnobabies stood out in every category:

Student Satisfaction

An overwhelming majority of people I have personally talked to who have used Hypnobabies were very satisfied with how Hypnobabies helped them during their pregnancies and births. Even if things didn't go exactly as planned, Hypnobabies prepared them with the tools they needed to feel confident and peaceful about their births. I didn't see this level of satisfaction with other methods.

Partner Involvement

Hypnobabies includes specific training for the birth partners. Many birth partners might be skeptical about whether it will really work, or if they can actually be of help. Thankfully, Hypnobabies gives very specific, concrete, and easy-to-remember skills so that birth partners can feel confident, competent, and helpful during the birth. Birth partners even get their own hypnosis track to listen to!

Tools

When a student signs up for Hypnobabies class, they immediately get to start listening to relaxing audio tracks that pave the way for a peaceful birth experience. There are 16 hypnosis tracks they listen to during pregnancy and birth, 5 written hypnosis scripts, and a quick reference guide so you can have the most commonly used information easily handy, and so, so much more!

More comprehensive

Our class is over 21 hours of instruction and includes basic information about nutrition and exercise, risks and benefits of commonly used medical procedures, the anatomy of what actually happens during the birth and immediately postpartum, breastfeeding, etc. etc. etc. You won't need another childbirth class, comfort measures class, Lamaze class, etc.

Most other childbirth preparation classes come from the perspective similar to: "Labor is going to be terrible, and everyone knows it, but here are some tips that might help you to tough it out. Maybe." They use tricks like the ice cube test, where students hold an ice cube in their hands for a specific time, and use breathing or distraction techniques to try to take their mind off of the pain.

Hypnobabies comes from a completely different perspective! Hypnobabies teaches that childbirth can be easier and more comfortable than our culture traditionally expects it to be, and gives you well-studied and successful tools for making your birth easier and more comfortable. We don't use distraction techniques; instead, we tune into the way the body and mind naturally work together and give you relaxing tools to practice that will make your birth so peaceful and relaxing!

Many Hypnobabies students are so relaxed during pressure waves (contractions) that they look like they are taking a restful nap. Care providers are often blown away at how calm Hypnobabies students are, even during the more intense parts of birthing.

FAQ Series Part 4: Can Hypnobabies Help me with Anxiety?

FAQ Series Part 4: Can Hypnobabies Help me with Anxiety?

I am often asked about how to deal with anxiety during pregnancy. Sometimes, the person has already been dealing with anxiety when she becomes pregnant, and is wondering how to manage it. Other times, the person has never really had anxiety, but it presents itself for the first time as perinatal anxiety (anxiety occurring during pregnancy or the first year postpartum). Even planned pregnancy is considered a stressful life event and can trigger negative emotions, especially when paired with other stressful life events like changing jobs, moving, remodeling, and changing lifestyle habits. (Or a flood.)

Some first-time moms are anxious about the unknowns of birth. They may wonder, "Will I get gestational diabetes? Will I tear while pushing? How can I avoid an episiotomy? Will I poop while I'm pushing? Will I have to be induced? How can I avoid a Cesarean?"

Mothers who have already experienced birth may have anxiety based on their past birth experiences, especially if they were particularly challenging or didn't go as planned. They might think, "That was too hard; I can't go through labor again." Or, "I'm scared that my birth will not turn out like I planned...again." Or even, "My first birth went so well, there's no way I'll be lucky enough to have another birth exactly the way I want." Sometimes mothers experience new anxieties and fears about birth that they didn't know they needed to process through until they become pregnant again.

One of the best-kept secrets about my Hypnobabies classes in Baton Rouge is that they teach lifelong skills that are applicable even after pregnancy. In Hypnobabies, you will learn SO many helpful tools for dealing with anxiety and fear about pregnancy and birth, including:

Joyful pregnancy affirmations

This is a unique and wonderful asset to your pregnancy. You can listen to this track throughout the day, as often as you like. It keeps you in a positive frame of mind and helps you to enjoy your pregnancy. You don't even have to "consciously" listen to it; you can play it in the background while you go about your day, and just watch how your anxieties melt away!

Mindfulness

This practice is lauded by positive psychologists, neuroscientists, spiritual leaders, and yoga instructors as one of the most effective ways to change your thinking. In Hypnobabies, we learn how to apply the benefits of mindfulness to pregnancy and birthing. Mindfulness has been life-changing for many of my students!

Hypnosis practice for deep relaxation

The core of Hypnobabies is the hypnosis techniques. Practicing the hypnosis techniques is relaxing and extremely enjoyable. It helps students to fall into a restful sleep, and can help them get back to sleep after middle-of-the-night bathroom trips. It also includes many, many post-hypnotic suggestions for an easy and comfortable pregnancy and birth experience.

I'm not a mental health professional or therapist, but I have first-hand experience with anxiety, and I have taught a good number of Hypnobabies students who have anxiety, with amazing results! Of course, please speak with your doctor, midwife, or mental health care provider and seek further treatment if necessary.
